REPORTS FROM MEETINGS
CEECLAM-2002
This first meeting took place in Warsaw in November. About 250 delegates
from Central Eastern Europe attended an excellent scientific programme.
This was hosted by our Polish counterpart PAIM and Hungarian colleagues
from MEBOT and was held at the Marriott Hotel, an outstanding venue.
Speakers from the UK included Dr. Kevin Somerville and the Editor,
Raymond Gill. It is hoped that this two and a half day meeting will be
published as it contains some very interesting data on life and
disability insurance. The next CEECLAM meeting is scheduled for 2004 in
Zagreb; details will be posted on the PAIM website accessible from the
AMS website.
EUMASS-2002
An enthusiastic meeting was held in Oslo in June at the Soria Moria
Conference centre, about 20 minutes train ride up the mountain behind
Oslo. About 70 Doctors in Social Security from the Common Market and
impending member countries joined for a stimulating meeting the guest
speaker being the Deputy Minister of Health. The Editor presented a
paper on 'Occupational Accidents' drawing on a wide variety of
occupations at risk from various parts of the world. The Eumass meeting
clearly showed the close association between Social Security Medicine
and private sector insurance in both risks and claims. Hopefully a
transcript of the meeting will be available.
AMERICAN ACADEMY OF INSURANCE MEDICINE
An excellent meeting was held on the 11th.to the 15th.October at the
Fairmont Scottsdale Princess Hotel in Phoenix, Arizona, under the good
care of Bob and Sharon Frank and their team.
The topics covered a full range of prognostic data, including New
Markers of CV Mortality, What Works and does Not Work in the Treatment
of Back Pain, Mortality Studies in RA and Lupus, Mortality in Stroke and
Survivors in TIA, LTC underwriting, Carpal Tunnel and Disability, The
Metabolic Syndrome, Congenital Heart Disease in Adults, Life Expectancy
During Social Turmoil-the East European Experience, NASH, Diastolic
Dysfunction in the Elderly, just to give a flavour of the high quality
presentations.
The Social Programme included a visit to Frank Lloyd Wright’s house,
Taliesin West, with the added excitement of the incidental discovery of
a `rattler` in one of the auditoria!
Personally this was a great opportunity to see Sedona, fly by helicopter
into the Grand Canyon, drive up to southern Utah to see Bryce Canyon and
Lake Powell, the journey of a `life-time`.
