ANNUAL REPORT 2007

The year 2007 started with Dr. Kevin Somerville’s Presidential address in February entitled `Evidence Based Medicine and Evidence Based Ratings-Similarities and Differences`.
The May meeting was cancelled as it coincided with the ICLAM meeting in Berlin, which was a great success. These 3 yearly events will continue with the 2010 meeting in Cape Town and details of the programme will be put on the web-site as they become available. This will be a great opportunity to combine a Medical Congress with plans to see the splendours of South Africa. The scientific content will be decided at a meeting in Antwerp in May for the Bureau of ICLAM and any topics that you may have to suggest are most welcome.
The 116th American Academy of Insurance Medicine held its annual meeting in September in Boston. This was most stimulating and pleasant location to improve on CME and historical knowledge at the same time.
The 2008 meeting will be in New York 4th.to 8th. October, details on the hyperlink from this web-site.
At the end of October we had a joint meeting with the Scottish Life Underwriters Club at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. The programme included the `Hot Topics` of eGFR, Pandemic Influenza, Early Diagnosis of Colonic Cancer and an Update on Hepatitis. After lunch a debate took place between Professor Michael O’Donnell and Dr Mairi Scott on the subject `Should Insurance Companies Manage Their Client’s Illnesses` and ably Moderated by Dr. Frank Vince. Two further presentations were:` Insurance Contracts: Is the Law in Need of reform?` and ‘Risk Taking, Is it Addictive?`. All of these presentations are on the password protected area of this web-site.
On the Educational front Dr. Frank Vince and Professor Michael O’Donnell have been coordinating with other members of Council the marking of examination papers for the Diploma for some 70 candidates. Congratulations on the time and effort to undertake this ongoing task for the Society.
The Finances continue in good shape under the stewardship of the Finance Committee.

The 2008 year will start with our AGM and Platform Presentation on the 6th.February, followed by a dinner at Lettsom House. The subject looks like being The Polypill and it’s Impact on Insurance Risk, the details will be added as soon as I have them.
In May we hope to have a joint meeting with the AMU in London on Laboratory Testing in Insurance Medicine and in November a topic on Psychiatry.
For the Spring of 2009, tentatively booked for April, a first ever 2 and a half day meeting with the AMU, Select 74 and the Health Claims Forum, possibly in Stratford on Avon.
The other point of interest is that CEECLAM, the Insurance Medicine Meeting for individuals east of the Danube, ranging from the Baltic States in the North to the Ukraine in the South is being held in Bucharest on the 11th to the 13th May. The programme is in English and an excellent opportunity to visit Rumania.
As details unfold they will be posted on Latest News.
